Despite huge losses, Rangers still need to work in the transfer market

We produced a piece yesterday on why Rangers could look at Bologna’s Aaron Hickey, and the majority of replies suggested we have no money and it was a dumb article.

In truth, we can see the point – Hickey is being monitored by AC Milan and has a market value into £10M.

But we do feel perhaps some readers overlooked the philosophy of our commentary, which is not so much we need to spend £10M we don’t have right now on a Bologna LB, but that our LB position as it stands could be better.

We have Borna Barisic and Calvin Bassey. On paper that seems great. But on the pitch it arguably isn’t.

Barisic’s form is dire at present, and Bassey hasn’t truly long-term proven himself.

So be it Hickey or a January Bosman, there is definitely a sense LB could do with a little spot of maintenance and maybe a fresh face.

Of course, we won’t spend a penny in the next window – we don’t have anything to spend. £25M of losses put paid to that.

But we really did mean Hickey re: next summer and the potential injection of around £50M by winning the SPL. It really is as much as that because of course it nigh-on guarantees CL.

And if Milan haven’t snapped Hickey up during January, Rangers could well have the funds come next summer to make a move, if we want to.

But in January, yes, we will be in the Bosman market alone, and we may have a suggestion or two in the coming weeks of who could make their way into Govan.

Stay tuned…
