There was an interesting quote from Steven Gerrard during pre-season, where Rangers’ manager admitted clean that he’d overplayed Connor Goldson, that he’d used the big defender more than he should have and that the former Brighton man would be rested a lot more ‘next season’.

But, interestingly, this is a statement which hasn’t actually happened, and the 27-year old has remained absolute resolute first choice with four men (give or take) battling to partner him.

We’re deep into November and Goldson has started every single match this season, an utter categorical first choice and the joint first name on the team sheet besides James Tavernier.

Which, incidentally, isn’t a criticism – Goldson has had probably his best season in the shirt, so far, and despite a slightly shaky performance at Easter Road, his consistency has been excellent and he’s absolutely vindicated Stevie’s faith in him.

But we hark back to that summer statement, and indeed the signing of an extra defender in Leon Balogun.

We wonder why Stevie said Goldson would be rested more, why he suggested he’d over-selected him, because he clearly didn’t have any overtures towards doing so.

And Goldson has justified being in the team – he has been very good this term.

But it is true that he and Tavernier are untouchable, undroppable, will play every match they’re fit, and that’s absolutely fine given just how good they have both been this season.

Stevie rated these two from the start, and this season, especially in Tavernier’s case, we see why.

But there’s no question the manager plays slight mind games with the press saying certain things and not entirely meaning them.

But as long as we play this well and win ditto, we can have no complaints.
