Rangers fans have chosen a new captain, and it’s not who’d you think

Last summer Steven Gerrard made a rather controversial decision – he made interim captain James Tavernier permanent leader on the pitch, a call which did not attract universal praise, but most fans tried to make the best of it.

However, following his frankly sub-par leadership fans have started having major doubts about his suitability for the role, and after he left Jordan Rossiter to deal with the media on Sunday the pressure on his armband has become notable.

In a recent Ibrox Noise poll, only 8% of respondents continued to endorse Tavernier as permanent captain, while the marginal favourite to get the gig was Scott Arfield on 29%, while he was closely followed by goalkeeper Allan McGregor on 27%.

Northern Ireland captain Gareth McAuley only attracted 10% while ex-Aberdeen captain Ryan Jack got a credible 19%.

But it does appear, of the present squad, the overwhelming favourites are Arfield and McGregor. We at Ibrox Noise would support the Canada international for the job, such is the praise we’ve lavished on his leadership qualities in midfield so far, while McGregor would be an excellent vice.

One thing is for sure, support for Tavernier in the role is now pretty thin.
