How Rangers may be yet set for a massive windfall…

Back in the 90s and 00s Rangers sold quite a few players for massive money. Carlos Cuellar, Giovanni Van Bronckhorst, Alan Hutton and Jean Alain Boumsong are only four examples of such big sales at £8M or more.

When James Tavernier got linked with a move out by a football aggregation site (something the man himself laughed off as fake news) we nevertheless posited what kind of fee we would expect if someone did bid for our in-form RB – we proposed around £5M minimum and the vast majority agreed based on the fact he is English and the crazy transfer fees which circulate the modern game.

However, yesterday’s big story was Chinese super league side Beijing Renhe reportedly bidding an incredible £8M for star hitman Alfredo Morelos, with numbers banding around a £27k pw wage for the Colombian.

The more stunning part to this story was Rangers’ blanket rejection of the bid, and those which reportedly preceded it.

Back in the day, Rangers simply did not reject that kind of offer for players. Financially we could afford to, but way back when, these offers were pretty much always accepted; the hoo hah over the rejection of this one is conspicuous, but we will try not to read too much into that.

Nevertheless, if this alleged bid really was nearly £10M as reported, for Rangers to say no to it suggests a couple of things:

One, that financially we really are more stable than many of us fear. After all, we did secure Hamilton’s Greg Docherty for the reported asking price of around £650,000. And two, the more cynical one, where China’s transfer window does not shut till later this month giving the rich side time to pump their bid up even higher so Rangers can sell the 21-year old for a king’s ransom.

Both could be the answer. Neither could be the answer. It is admittedly conjecture.

Nevertheless, Morelos has definitely done the business on the pitch this season – along with Declan John, the best signing last summer, with an honourable mention to Daniel Candeias too.

But he is quoted as wanting to leave at the end of the season;

“I hope to keep doing very well and look for a bigger club in the Premier League at the end of the season.”

He has not denied these comments, and in truth they are, in part, fair enough, because the EPL is the Promised Land for so many players. Unfortunately for Alfie, the statement of ‘looking for a bigger club’ is not the kind of talk that goes down too well with fans who believe our club is the biggest around.

Nevertheless, if he keeps on scoring and doing the business at Ibrox, he will surely get his move this summer. And quite honestly, if Jason Cummings develops into the striker we expect him to, such a loss will be less heavy.

  1. The only caution I have in all this. Is I really hope Morelos does not take his foot off the pedal and think he can meander through games and expect big offers to come flooding in for him. It's up to Murty and Co to keep his feet on the ground and get him to continue to show the world what he is capable of doing. If he doesn't, then no such offers will be forthcoming in the summer.

    • Jimbo mate he's going to be trying harder than ever to try getting in to the Columbian squad for the world cup, they have 2 fruendlys next month and if he goes to the world cup and scores 25M no bother!!
      Cummings?? Must just be me!!

    • Agreed GersJimbo 👍
Also agree with your point Robbie that if he goes to world cup, plays well and scores a few …that figure will certainly hit double figures 💪

  2. If we are refusing £8 million up front despite the tims nonsense (why would we make it up and unsettle our biggest threat up front?) and the BBC with its recent retraction, then our club is in for some investment.
Murray would have bitten their hands off for £8 million.

  3. I agree he needs to get more sharper less lazy I think he may carry a couple of pounds more than the needs ..Cummings will help this I hope by showing how to move and chase back in games, he knows how to play Scottish Football

  4. El Buffalo 🐃, my thoughts on his "bigger club" statement were that he was looking for a bigger club in the EPL. I think he means he's not wanting to move to a lower placed EPL team. He wants a move to another big club, not some mediocre EPL team where he's not likely to win anything and make it into his national team. He's always said that's his aim and I think the translation along with the media in this country trying to undermine him and cause friction within our club as usual. Look, if Alfredo does well for Rangers and does get a move to the EPL, you can guarantee we're gonna make some money for him. If it's more than we paid and we look at what he's done for us already (even with the missed chances) then we've been lucky to have him. Not everyone's end game is Rangers, rightly or wrongly. If they give all they have for us and EARN a big move in their eyes then why would we stand in their way? #WATP 🇬🇧

  5. Well for me i am not going hold my breath what comes our way is good we need to hold on to the good players and get rid of the crap,it would be great to have a first team pool full of multi-million pound players that only happens if we can hold our best players and then more will come.

  6. 8 million now isnt 8 million 10 yeats ago – thats inflation but the article has some truth in it.
murty has played a blinder – murphy, middleton and docherty will do great.

    the norwich fans love middleton

  7. Not sure if we should have let him go,i read in the DR that he now is demanding a wage rise it could just be paper talk but if it is not how much is Morelos wanting that will make him want to stay and not just take the first offer that comes in with better wages,is this just paper talk,or is this the start of problems from him and other players that get less pay for doing the job when others do far less for more money?
