Rangers secure £2.25M for Ianis Hagi – cash to be reinvested?

Going by what we’re learning, Rangers have pulled off something of a masterstroke with Ianis Hagi’s departure by securing a £1M loan fee, AND Deportivo paying his entire wage.

The Romanian playmaker has moved to Spain for the season in a move that could become permanent if he impressed albeit there is no contractual option to buy that we’re aware of at this point, but that is all in good time.

In the here and now, Rangers have managed to get £1M up front as a pure disposable capital for Hagi, while also arranging that the Spaniards pay his wage.

Infamously, Rangers only paid a small portion of Aaron Ramsey’s wage – Juventus still paid the lion’s share of it. Naturally the Famous couldn’t exactly afford his ridiculous £450,000pw numbers.

And often in loans that’s the case – the parent club will pay a portion of the player’s wage still while they’re out on loan.

But in Hagi’s case Alaves have agreed to pay his full salary, reported to be around £25,000 (new contract in December) and that frees up big money for the club to invest in alternative areas – it amounts to around £1.25M extra.

It is also envisaged that the restructuring of the wage there caused by this loan move will not be altered, and that he’s not seen as one who will return. His own goodbye more or less confirmed this.

So it’s worked out very well indeed for Rangers – a surplus player gone, even if most of the fans loved him, and a wage freed by the club to reinvest elsewhere, potentially a left-sided defender. Or defender, period, right Harry?

With Glen Kamara’s wage, around £22,000, also being freed up soon, Rangers will have £45,000 to budget for in the near future.
