“Rangers don’t need any more midfielders….”

We hear this every single time Rangers are mentioned in the same breath as a potential new midfielder. And the further comments usually centre on how we need defenders and strikers.

And yet, if you look at the midfield we have, it’s riddled with problems, none of which are obvious but which hide fault lines that one injury would expose.

The first key problem is age. Only Glen Kamara is less than 28, with the rest all over 30 now. Kamara, 26, Lundstram, 28, Jacko, 30, Davo 37, Scotty 33.

This is a chronically aging part of the team and it needs the age reduced quite significantly.

Secondly, only one of these players is actually firmly established as first choice – the rest all cycle. Lundstram is the clear first pick, but it’s anyone’s guess who will go alongside him. He is also one injury away from a crisis in that area.

And speaking of injuries, while Lunny, Scotty and Kamara have few to none, Jacko and Davo are frequently out. Right now they’re both available, but how long can we rely on that?

There’s also the sale stories around Kamara, the youngest player, which could be quite damaging if he is indeed sold.

So, while on the face of it our midfield is ok, dig a little deeper and it’s too old and too close to trouble with injuries.

We do need a younger reliable body in there if possible, and while we’re giving up on that being Billy Gilmour, a player of that age range and potential quality would be good.

What’s for sure, we no longer have Joe Aribo who was adaptable to CM, and we haven’t replaced him with any CMs at all.

So do we have enough? For now, just about, but overall, it could use a little improvement.
