We were thoroughly intrigued by Rangers’ fan choice for Player of the Year last night – Alfredo Morelos.

Don’t get us wrong, he’s the best striker in Scotland by a distance, and it’s hard to really complain about the honour.

But only hours earlier, Ibrox Noise had run a poll to ask who the fans rated as POTY, and not a soul mentioned Morelos.

The majority was for Calvin Bassey, then James Tavernier and some strong shouts (including from Ibrox Noise) for John Lundstram.

Even reaction online was surprised at Morelos winning, especially given this was the fans’ own award.

It’s an odd one – we know how good Morelos is, and how especially impressive he’s been since November, but prior to that he was pretty poor and few would argue otherwise.

But the fact is fans we saw didn’t pick Morelos, in fact, of what we saw, not a soul chose him.

So we’re a little at a loss to explain why the fan award went to him.

If it was reflected in opinion we saw, it was a three-way fight between Tav, Bassey and Lunny – and indeed, even the players themselves agreed and gave it to Tav.

Bassey got young player and Lunny got best goal.

But Morelos as POTY?

That was bizarre. Not completely undeserved, but by no means an obvious choice.
