Niko Katic comment gives major Rangers perspective on draw

Since Celtic:

Hearts 5-0

Hibs 2-0

Annan 3-0

Dortmund 4-2.

Four matches. 14 goals. 2 conceded. Including maybe the greatest European night in Rangers’ history.

And yet one bad result v Utd sees, again, a deep loss of perspective and the end of the world. A match in which we played very well, and just couldn’t find a way through a sea of orange.

Niko Katic said in 2020:

“You play at home in front of 50,000 people who expect you to score 10 goals, every game. It’s difficult because you have 10 players in front of the 16 yards (line). You can’t score, sometimes you just can’t score, you have a lot of possession but can’t score. But when we watch the other leagues, I would compare it with Man City, they have the same problems in the Premier League.”

And he’s not wrong, is he? Yet, after the defensive performance of their lives (it was close to an SPL record-breaking number of defensive contributions throughout the team of 94 in total) in which they held out against a siege, Rangers fans have decided the world has ended and this was a ruinous afternoon.

And this is what the demands at Rangers actually are. A result like that despite a torrent of Rangers pressure means the game is up, the league is lost and Celtic are the champions.

Despite the smug comments of Celtic yesterday declaring the title won, some of our fans have surrendered it too, which really isn’t great at all.

We are well aware the pressure at Ibrox is win every match, because it’s the end of the world if we don’t. But there’s got to be a spot of sense, where we acknowledge our form is good, while Celtic are scraping wins. Sooner or later their luck will run out, while our consistency will come.

Or are we just going to wave the white flag?
