Time for a change in the guard at Ibrox?

Allan McGregor Rangers Robby McCrorie

Let’s be clear before we start this one – we are in no way scapegoating the joint-best goalie Rangers have ever had alongside Andy Goram.

Allan McGregor has been an absolutely sensational stopper for us and this is in no way a badmouth of him, because few admire the man as much as us.

But if today’s painful draw at County taught us any one thing, it’s that Greegsy’s best days are behind him and it’s time for Robby McCrorie to make more starts.

We won’t dress it up – McGregor was literally terrible, making numerous mistakes and costing at least two goals. He was shaky, unreliable, gaffe-prone and uncertain, and he looked like he knows his glorious career is at an end.

We will not have anyone slating him – he will know as well as us and everyone else how poor he was today, and he will be big enough to take it on the chin.

But it does look now like his time in the game is coming to a close, because aside a little renaissance of form he had after Gio took over, McGregor has been pretty abysmal this season, and a shadow of the incredible term he had for 55.

He knows this himself – a master like he knows when he’s not performing, but it’s further reason to fully integrate young McCrorie into the team.

Forget McLaughlin, he’s an able deputy but that’s about it – McCrorie is the future, and if the club doesn’t trust him yet, we need someone new.

But McGregor’s time in the game appears to be drawing to its close – and anyone slaughtering him for one bad afternoon in the Highlands isn’t a true Ger.

We can call out a bad performance, objectively, but we are never criticising him or the goalie he’s been for us.

But the old guard may now be ready to retire, and he’s more than earned it.
