James Sands’ move to Rangers has become closer after sources confirmed talks went well and the USA international is set to join Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side on an 18-month loan with option to buy.

GVB’s connections with Giovanni Reyna, son of Claudio, saw Gio’s own agent play a big part in this, working as he does for Sands too, and current New York team mate Gedion Zelalem also provided a big CV for the Rangers given as he was a Light Blue for a while too.

The 21-year old is mainly a CB, but can also play wide at RB (both positions deeply needing new blood now) and can also fill in at DM as well.

The 7-time USA international is extremely highly thought of, and a very coveted player, with impressive stats for a CB and RB in his home league.

This would be his first major move out of the MLS into the big time, and we obviously hope it goes a hell of a lot better than our last two signings from that neck of the woods in Zelalem and Chicago Fire’s Matt Polster.

But this is a firm Gio signing, this is through him, and we suspect good friend Claudio Reyna helped here as well, given as he is Sporting Director of Austin FC, who have faced Sands many times.

So it’s set to be Rangers’ first January signing, and we look forward to seeing how this lad does at the Famous.
