Two-month shutdown possible for Rangers as SPFL make decision

Scottish football could be heading for a near-two month shutdown after Covid case rises led to an emergency meeting with a mandate of hauling the winter break 3 weeks forward.

The break is currently scheduled for two days after the Old Firm in January, on the 4th, to last till late January, but this potential change would see the break begin on Boxing Day and there is no guarantee the game would re-open in late January either, as Callum Davidson rightly argues.

The decision is expected by Friday as to the path ahead, and the final call will go with the SPFL’s board, but it must be remembered such a break benefits Celtic, Aberdeen and Hibs infinitely more than it does Rangers, who will be denied an empty Parkhead for the 2nd if this goes through.

Indeed, Celtic have been the biggest preachers of having this done, and while fairness does point out health comes first, they also stand to benefit from it most given their complaints about fixture congestion which has nothing to do with Covid or health.

As for Rangers? Aside a few injuries and absences (6 in all), the squad is in good enough nick, give or take, and the club has made no complaint about the situation, getting on with it best we can.

In many ways, GVB’s men stand to lose the most if this goes through, on a football level, if not so much financially.

We don’t want to be cynical, and we are not trivialising health concerns, but it’s very telling who’s tubthumping for this the loudest.
