Four wins in, and Rangers’ Gio secret is starting to become clear

Giovanni van Bronckhorst has a secret, and it’s become more noticeable to trained eyes as time has worn on.

Rangers’ manager, who secured another piece of history yesterday with his fourth win in a row, has shown nous, acumen, dignity and grace since taking the position of Ibrox chief almost three weeks ago, but something else very subtle has become apparent about him, in a huge contrast to, for example, the ex-manager.

GVB rarely to never answers a direct question.

That’s right, for those who have observed his performances with the media, the new boss is 90% cryptic and evasive about just about every poser he’s given, always providing rhetoric and vague retorts rather than the ‘direct talking’ that so many of his predecessors have been ‘guilty’ of.

And as a result, been called out on.

We will never forget the ‘do I look happy’ line, which mocked both Emma Dodds and the media at large, before the man stabbed us in the back, but that direct talking was far from the first time he’d lied.

And his predecessors, especially Mark Warburton, were masters of giving ‘direct’ answers which in fact were complete horse manure.

Instead?

We have GVB – who rather than charming us with false honesty (there’s a paradox for you), never says anything that he will be called out on.

Any answers to specific topics are always vague, and he’s a master of poker, of keeping his cards flush against his chest and effectively never revealing them. At all.

And yet he is still charming – he’s courteous, unflappable, calm, and always polite in his answers, but they rarely to never give the hacks the meat they want.

Nor do they ever give material that may haunt him in the future.

Of course, he will let slip the odd thing here and there – he’s only human and keeping all secrets and agenda watertight is hard to do.

But 90%? He’s gloriously vague, giving enough to keep the media and fans happy but without ever revealing that hand.

And that’s the way we like it.
