GVB (or whoever) must be aware of one big thing at Rangers

If there is one thing Rangers’ new manager, Giovanni Van Bronckhorst or not, will be well aware of coming into Ibrox, it’s that there will be absolutely no money to spend in January.

Any improvement in the side will be based on a new system, personnel changes and of course, ‘new manager syndrome’ but not on any paid-for signings in the upcoming window.

The Bosman market has been kind to Rangers – Allan McGregor, Scott Arfield, Steven Davis, John Lundstram, Fashion Sakala, effectively Glen Kamara, and one or two others have been major signings of high quality in recent years, so we’re not going to slaughter freebies.

Because that is all the new boss will be able to work with in January.

But that said, we do have great optimism that with a little tweaking, this Rangers squad is very very good, and just needs selection shake ups to completely re-energise the form and get the full hunger back.

The infrastructure is there – there are plenty of fine players in this squad, and we will absolutely credit Steven Gerrard for bringing in such a strong squad and improving the quality.

It just ran out of steam, and a new manager is a fresh start for everyone.

But there won’t be a lot of movement in January unless we can work wonders in the Bosman market, which isn’t impossible.

A lot of players will want to come to Ibrox to play for Gio, should it be him, and frankly GVB commands respect on the same level as Gerrard (used to?).

So we can expect good things if he gets the job.

Just don’t expect Frenkie De Jong joining up any time soon.
