Steven Gerrard has today sent a cryptic message to Rangers’ board after admitting his side can’t compete in Europe because he’s had no money to spend for the last two transfer windows.
Speaking at his pre-Hibs presser, the manager was addressing Rangers’ lack of spark and invention this season, but laid the blame for the poor European form squarely at the feet of the feeble transfer windows he’s had in 2021, with barely a bean spent this year and all transfers being either free or £300,000 deals.
Gerrard said:
“We need in transfer windows to spend big money. It’s as simple as that. To compete with the teams we’re playing against we have to spend big money. In the last two windows we haven’t spent a penny [long pause].”
The thing is he didn’t add a disclaimer saying the board have supported him but there’s been no money for the club to spend, Gerrard only said we’ve spent nothing and didn’t add anything further.
This was a telling and damning comment – he clearly isn’t happy at having no cash, and we admit at Ibrox Noise that we preached that we had to spend big money this summer to sustain the momentum.
That didn’t happen, and it wasn’t Gerrard’s fault – he felt exactly the same. For all the mistakes we think he’s made, the lack of cash wasn’t one of them.
