The Newcastle threat to make a move for Steven Gerrard appears to have completely weaned after the early favourite fell from odds-on number one in the first day or so to now dipping way down in fourth, with Roberto Martinez, Antonio Conte and Lucien Favre all miles ahead.

There is talk about this potentially being Stevie’s last as Rangers manager, dependent on 56 we imagine, but after his odds plummeted in the rankings and others took centre stage it appears the temporary interest in his being Steve Bruce’s immediate replacement is now over.

Brendan Rodgers and Eddie Howe, early pace setters, have also dimmed completely in the listings, with Favre number one, albeit only marginally ahead of Conte.

But our interest is Gerrard, and going by current information and the odds, the manager is remaining in Govan despite being ‘intrigued’ by what’s happening in Geordieland.

It’s good news for Rangers fans who knew had cash-rich Newcastle made a strong offer, Gerrard might just have been tempted.

But it seems they won’t, and Rangers fans will have their manager at least until the summer, and we shall see how things develop after that.
