Aberdeen decision by Rangers following passing of Sir Walter

The football world is in mourning today following the passing of Sir Walter Smith. The Rangers legend departed this world after a battle with illness and the tributes pouring in for this globally loved icon of football give an idea of the regard he was held in.

But there was a question of tomorrow’s Aberdeen match, and the tentative suggestion of whether it might be postponed.

The word from Rangers this morning is the match goes ahead, and frankly it’s what Walter would have wanted anyway.

As a deeply emotional Steven Gerrard said this morning, the best way Rangers can honour Walter is with a good performance and three points in his memory, and of course, it goes without saying there’ll be a silence, possibly two minutes, prior to kick off.

How will the players respond? Many of them were close friends of Walter, namely Allan McGregor and Steven Davis, with many others not far off, so quite how they’ll handle the trivial matter of a match of football is something only they will know.

It will weigh heavily, as it should, but as true Rangers players and professionals they need to go about their business in a way Walter would have approved of.

This is about our manager, Walter Smith. He will always be Rangers manager, and we want to remember him the best way by giving him the kind of performance and result to show what a legend he was.

It’ll be emotionally charged, an intense affair – for most of us this is like losing a family member.

So as we welcome Aberdeen to Ibrox, give the man the result his memory deserves.
