Steven Gerrard has a mini injury and absences crisis for this Saturday’s trip to St Johnstone, as a host of first-team stars became doubts for the weekend.
Ianis Hagi is a certain absence with Covid, Ryan Jack remains sidelined, Nathan Patterson withdrew from Scotland duty, and James Tavernier is a doubt through simple recovery and fitness issues.
It could see a continuation at RB for the outstanding Leon Balogun, who turned back the years against Celtic with a MOTM display in the position he’s recently struggled at, so in many ways Rangers might not need to be too worried anyway.
But Hagi’s absence is a blow. While he was an unused sub v Celtic, the Romanian is bang in form (a worldie assist for his country midweek) and his shrewd operations would have helped against a stubborn Saints who might not be winning a lot at the moment but are hard to beat for sure.
Jack of course remains out for the foreseeable while Tavernier has only just returned to training and might not be counted on to last a full 90.
Otherwise, the squad is in reasonable nick and face a side who will make it tough for us.
Onwards and upwards.
