It’s ok to question Steven Gerrard

Ibrox Noise regulars will know we did little but praise Steven Gerrard last season, and the man deserved it. He did something beyond impossible, and he will be forever a legend for it.

However, while it’s not quite zero to hero this term, there’s no doubt we have to start, for the first time in a long time, questioning a lot of his management in season 21/22 because Rangers have been entirely awful this campaign and are top of the table via pure luck.

That luck is that the rest of the SPL is completely horrible, but at some point someone is going to click into gear and threaten Rangers’ position, and we cannot rely on the results of other teams to keep us top.

Gerrard’s calls in recent months have been mostly poor. We’re going to be bold and say that.

Go on, scream ‘get a grip’ and ‘ya dirty tim’ and ‘get behind the team’ and ‘we’re top of the table ya prick’ and ‘in Stevie we trust’.

Ok done?

Right, for those of you still there able to stomach SG being questioned, we make this point:

Stevie didn’t become a bad manager overnight?

Well, he became a good one overnight.

The glory and wonder of 55 and the league form as well as European is starting to thin as an excuse when you look at just how similar Rangers are playing to pre-55.

Gerrard is now more and more starting to come into focus, as we fast approach October, and he must take that criticism on the chin and fix what is clearly beginning to derail.

A number of key calls are being pored over by fans keen to understand what’s going ‘wrong’ this season, and we’ll take you through them:

Dumping Nathan Patterson despite his form.

Retaining James Tavernier despite his.

Throwing Niko Katic out on loan and spinning a line about him needing minutes.

Prioritising Jack Simpson who, at this stage, is tragic. He’s been here 9 months.

Dropping Bassey for the deeply out of form Barisic.

Sticking with 76-year old Steven Davis who, by his standards, is having an awful season and looks leggy.

Giving Robby McCrorie no pathway and dumping him, with McGregor also looking off it.

Sticking with out of form Kent until he got injured, refusing to give minutes to Wright till he had no choice.

Signing a DM in Bacuna and bringing him on at LW.

Sticking with Glen Kamara who is simply not interested this season.

Ditto Morelos.

Refusing to change to a plan B.

Sticking by contract rebels Goldson and Kamara despite neither playing well.

We could go on.

Gerrard also had the tenacity to suggest Rangers were ‘outstanding’ today, before then calling his side ‘flakey’.

It’s all a bit poor and no longer looks cohesive.

We’ve had a fair chunk of this season so far to digest, and it isn’t getting much better.

We offer no solutions for now, just honesty.
