Harsh truth about winger exposed as Rangers’ Hagi lights up Ibrox

Ianis Hagi’s impact as second half sub last night we may have already looked at, but it only drives home two things:

Scott Wright, honest enough trier though he is, was painfully exposed as coming up short on the level of quality Rangers need. We love his attitude, his drive, and his grit, but for pure ability, he isn’t of the standard needed.

Useful squad player for sure, maybe a very useful impact player, but just not good enough to start regularly. And definitely nowhere near the quality of Ryan Kent nor will he ever be.

But if you doubt the sincerity of this, the second thing is the difference Hagi made when he came on which showed just the level you need to be to make it at this club.

He added quality, vigour and spark and he made things happen – something Wright isn’t capable of.

Scott can add energy, and run into channels, but for that killer vision, pass, touch, or moment of quality, he isn’t quite up to it.

And that hike in quality is what made the difference last night, with Hagi providing what Wright could not.

Bear in mind, neither Roofe nor Morelos are especially creative players – they don’t have marvellous vision and they won’t be able to pick out many eyes of needles, so to speak.

Hagi can. And alongside the Colombian and Jamaican the Romanian gave Rangers’ attack what it lacked, and probably has for quite a few matches.

This doesn’t bin Scott Wright – he absolutely has a contribution to make. But long term we need the Roofes, Sakalas, Hagis and Kents of this world to create that moment of magic.

And there’s nothing wrong with that.
