Steven Gerrard has today dropped a major hint, if a cryptic one, about Rangers’ disappointing summer transfer window, when asked this morning if he’d ‘got what he wanted’.

The Rangers boss was being quizzed on the nature of Rangers’ business over June and July, and was asked, simply, whether it was enough, and his reply was as cryptic yet telling as it gets.

He said:

“We made the most of what was available. And that’s all I can say on that.”

This short response says more than a full lengthy diatribe would have.

Either, Rangers made the most of what players were available this summer, and did the best they could with the options at their disposal, or…

Rangers just didn’t have the money this summer, and the management did the best they could with those funds.

In truth, let’s face it, it’s the second one. There was no shortage of talent available for Rangers to sign, but three Bosmans and a buy now pay later on a Huddersfield player hints that there just weren’t any funds.

That Gerrard did not use the phrase ‘we made the most of what players were available’ and deliberately remained a little coy about his wording hints very much that the cash just wasn’t there this summer and we made the most of what resources we had.

Let’s be real – Rangers would have signed serious quality this summer had the ability to do so been there. But unlike previous summers with the traditional £10M-£13M budget, there just wasn’t that there this time.

But, hey, we might be wrong, and he might have meant players. What do we know?
