Rangers last night were claimed to be close to the announcement of former Sheffield midfielder John Lundstram, following months of viral rumours alleging the English Rangers fan was a target amidst contract turmoil.

After Lundstram made it clear he would not be renewing his United deal, Rangers, Crystal Palace and Burnley have been closely linked, mostly by the rumour press, without anything tangible ever coming from Rangers on the topic.

And last night a national red top’s journo claimed Lundstram is the announcement Stevie G is set to make this week, following Rangers’ manager’s reveal that a new signing was close.

The whole Lundstram story has been virally-generated for months now, and it’s not one we’ve ever heard from any legitimate source.

Whether you’d argue a red top hack is such a thing is for you to decide, not us, but either way Rangers do need some additions in midfield with so much flux in that area. Davis’ age, Arfield and Jack’s injuries, Kamara’s potential sale, and Zungu’s exit mean a bit of new blood there is welcome.

And there’s no denying Lundstram is a player alright – is he the level required for a serious assault on the CL? Yes, he is. He didn’t quite manage an England cap (wrong time to be over 25 and English) but the guy has a boatload of talent and you don’t amass two top class seasons in the PL if you can’t do the business.

Whether Kamara stays or goes, whatever the status of the rest – Lundstram is a top class player who would enhance Rangers.

If Stevie has got him north, it’s an excellent coup.

We wait with baited press to see if those press claims are accurate…
