With a bit of concern rumbling over Rangers’ backline, Steven Gerrard has been linked with a surprise move for old England warhorse Gary Cahill.

The 34-year old is currently a free agent with former club Crystal Palace trying to regain his services, but as of now, Gerrard has been mentioned as interested in bringing the ex-Chelsea man to Ibrox.

Obviously it would be a free transfer, and the wage is already being quoted at a frankly reasonable £35,000, which for a player of Cahill’s calibre isn’t bad at all.

The 61-times capped ex-England international has about as outstanding a CV as they come, with his marquee time at Stamford Bridge standing out in concert with the two PL titles, two UEL trophies and CL he won in 2012.

In short, Cahill is as alpha a defender as they get, and while he’s no spring chicken any more, at 34 he still has a tonne to offer.

Is the link real? Rangers definitely need more quality at the back – Leon Balogun is always an injury concern, Connor Goldson is still unsigned to a new deal, Niko Katic doesn’t seem to be getting near the first team at the moment, George Edmundson isn’t favoured and Filip Helander is still on holiday. And Jack Simpson hasn’t impressed anyone.

Is he one we’d want? Ever since he left Chelsea in 2018 his PL CV has been drying up. Injury has got in the way and his appearances since 2018 number 56 which while prophetic, isn’t super inspiring.

He’s still a top stopper but we’re not sure he’s exactly at his peak any more.

But if Stevie wants him we won’t argue.
