Steven Gerrard appears to have a job on his hands keeping a hold of both Connor Goldson and Glen Kamara this summer after it emerged neither has signed a new deal and both rejected initial offers.

The duo, a crucial part of Stevie’s machine and Rangers’ 55, are massive components and near ever-presents both, but while both have said no to initial terms, their situations are a bit different.

Goldson is indispensable to this manager – he is the main stormtrooper for Steven Gerrard and missed 0 minutes of last season, which may be some sort of record, frankly, and is regarded as unsellable. He is a player Rangers would only accept a crazy bid to even consider parting company, something well over £25M. It is also known PL clubs are keeping tabs on him given he’s out of contract next summer. Goldson may well be considering sampling the CL with Rangers then leaving for free next summer to a PL club, but that’s conjecture.

Meanwhile Kamara is not as indispensable. He’s well rated and well respected but he’s not a player universally coveted by fans and if a good bid came in he wouldn’t be regarded as the biggest and most irreplaceable loss. He has been in and out of the first team under Stevie, more in than out but far from a guaranteed starter since his arrival.

That all said, both of them are keeping their options open it seems – this contract talk has been going on for half a year in Kamara’s case and many months ago in Goldson’s – Stevie admitted earlier this year that he was trying to get both of them to commit to Rangers.

That this has not happened yet is very telling.

Time will tell.
