Stevie G may have unearthed an absolute gem

A day or two ago we praised Rangers’ management in signing Scott Wright as a kick up the backside for Ryan Kent. That his acquisition was a reminder the former Liverpool man didn’t have it all his own way and competition was now properly here.

Well, Wright’s MOTM award yesterday following an energetic display on his first start and assist for the Famous reminded Ryan Kent doubly of his need to keep the performances up, and indeed may have given the former Aberdeen forward a bigger chance to feature more in the first team.

Of course, this was Cove Rangers, and the match was a stroll in the end – but any of Rangers’ a-list heavyweights could have turned it on, and any of the fringe men could have stood out, but of all XI selected by Stevie G, it was the attacker who got the most plaudits.

We absolutely did not understand why management was bringing in this rather modest attacker from Pittodrie, a player without much reputation and potential injury issues, but his start to life at Ibrox has shown why they’re paid the big bucks to do what they do and we just scribe about it.

Sure, he might not quite be at the level of Laudrup just yet, but his energy, pace, hunger and no lack of skill has been refreshing, and his starring performance last night showed he has a lot to offer, and we might just see a lot more of him over the split and further cup outings.

It’s honestly a fine sight to see a lad signed with little reputation and for such a low sum (£300K) excel in the way he has so far – he’s really given Ryan Kent something to think about, and crucially, following a fine outing in Govan last night, Stevie G also has a new and wanted selection dilemma himself.
