“By some distance, Rangers best player” – ratings v Liege

After Rangers earned their place in the last 32, how did the players score on a tough night in Govan?

Ibrox Noise brings you our ratings for the fifth match day.

McGregor:

A bit shaky with some of his kicking, but he always was, and was completely out of it for a cross in the first half. But he did make one or two important saves. 7

Tavernier:

Very mixed night for Tav whose level has definitely dipped lately. He scored the crucial penalty, but was caught out a few times to say the least, playing a part in both conceded goals, and we’ve seen better crossing from him this season – he only tried twice. 7

Goldson:

Bit of a mixed bag here too. Like Tav, he was caught napping defensively, but his equaliser was terrific. He got better as things wore on. 7

Balogun:

Strong, and got in some useful clearances, but wasn’t particularly comfortable at any point in this one till later, and like the rest of the backline, he’s been better. 6

Barisic:

Wonderful corner for the assist, but was mostly snuffed out by Liege’s shape early on, which majorly nullified Tavernier too. Defensively exposed too but got a lot more space later on and the brilliant crossing returned too. 7

Davis:

Struggled to get a foothold in this one till later as well, being outnumbered a lot, although he worked very hard to try and get the ball back. He certainly didn’t hide, and got better as the match continued. 7

Kamara:

Strangely below par from the Finn, another one caught out by Liege’s system. Yet again, he got better as the game advanced, but he was definitely on an off-night overall. 6

Kent:

Wonderful assist for Scotty’s winner, and had a few dangerous moments, but probably didn’t have the influence he would want and in fairness he was well marked. 7

Arfield:

By a country mile Rangers’ best player, Arfield proves time and time again how invaluable he is, and covered the whole pitch all night. 8

Roofe:

A strong performance here, Roofe did what he could to hold the play up, and worked hard. He wasn’t particularly incisive, but his effort was excellent. 7

Morelos:

Fans raged in debate about him after the final whistle, and we’d have to say this was probably Morelos’ worst performance in Europe for Rangers, maybe in his career. He was ghastly. He gave the ball away numerous times, both in possession and in passing, and looked weak, tired, and just not in the mood. At 63% his passing average was abysmal. He is capable of a tonne better at this level, but not this one. He did win some fouls, and got a shot in. 5

Steven Gerrard:

The manager picked a strong team and they should have delivered much better than they did for the majority of the match, but the final half an hour was excellent, and showed their fighting qualities. He will be puzzled why Liege had such a hold over us, and he made good changes to freshen things up. Sadly his half time team talk made little difference, but he will be pleased the players kept plugging at it and never gave in. 7
