Rangers and NI were hit by baseless rumours last night as star midfielder Steven Davis’ withdrawal from international duty was seized upon by some scurrilous individuals and stories about international retirement and potential retirement from football for the 35-year old began swirling about.
The calm playmaker has had a bit of a tough time lately, as we covered earlier, with some injury issues blighting him both domestically and internationally, and this recent withdrawal for ‘personal reasons’ is the latest ‘cloud’ hanging over him, but the guy definitely doesn’t need lies being spread about his future in the game.
Be it international or club, Davis will only retire when the time is right for him, and as long as he can restore his full fitness, he’s going nowhere for a long long time.
There are at least two or three years left in his legs yet, and we don’t know why anyone in the media would pick on him to make up stories about retirement.
Even his manager Ian Barraclough condemned the stories, saying clearly the media are making them up, because there’s nothing to suggest Davis will go that way.
Nothing whatsoever.
