Steven Gerrard has a massive dilemma on his hands

Steven Gerrard has two colossal dilemmas this weekend, when Rangers make their way over to Brian Rice’s Hamilton.

One of these dilemmas we alluded to earlier (we’ll get to the other later), and it really is a biggie.

Does Gerrard stick with the fairly in-form Filip Helander (as we revealed, statistically he’s been Rangers’ best defender this season) or does he revert back to the admittedly very impressive Leon Balogun and restore the partnership with Connor Goldson?

The Balogun Goldson pair did work rather well, the Nigeria international thrived through his pace, his power, his tackling and his aerial strength. He explained that Goldson talked him through everything, so while we don’t necessarily see the former Brighton man looking that impressive at all times, his coaching of the new boy clearly helped the ex-Werder stopper find his way in the game.

His one weaker display was v St Johnstone, possibly carrying an injury, which certainly doesn’t suit Hamilton’s surface.

However x2, Filip Helander has historically struggled on this surface, with some really weak displays, particularly on Killie’s plastic pitch, so it’s not just as simple as 1,2,3.

Gerrard will have to make a clever call here, or could he go left field and put George Edmundson out there, who’s younger and maybe more ‘supple’ for the rigours of the rotten 3G pitch.

Either way, it’s a big choice, and Stevie has to get it right.

Hamilton haven’t been incredible this season so far (1w 3d) but they’ll be up for this.
