Sources; 23-year old to leave in January

With Rangers’ midfield enjoying what can only be described as a very purple patch indeed, competition has rarely been stronger for the first team slots.

Ryan Jack, Glen Kamara, Steven Davis and Joe Aribo appear to have secured something of a monopoly on the shirts, with Scott Arfield an extra option when not used on the right wing.

However, this has led to talk of the future of Greg Docherty, again.

We discussed it not that long ago, and put it to you readers to see where you stood on his qualifications to have more involvement.

The result was quite strong in favour of him being given a chance, but it’s evident Steven Gerrard isn’t interested, at least for now, in giving him minutes or even a place in the match squad, and as such there is information that the former Hamilton man will be leaving in January.

Likely on loan, in fairness, but the reality is the manager doesn’t rate or want him.

The signing of a player with slightly inferior stats last season in the same division and for a better team in Aribo really put paid to any notion Gerrard was looking at Docherty as a viable option.

Whether the fans like him or not, rate him or not, word is Docherty will leave this winter, and in all honesty who can blame him.

Exiled from the squad, he doesn’t even get runouts for the dev squad/Colts, which even Eros Grezda manages. Your guess is as good as ours there, folks.

Of course, it’s hard to be critical – we might like him but boy is this Rangers midfield doing the business right now – so we have to back the manager.

But it’s a shame Docherty, one of us, couldn’t be part of it.
