Rangers may have signed an absolute gem

We’ve spoken about this lad before, but we must say Nathan Young-Coombes is doing a stellar job of making Rangers fans forget all about Billy Gilmour.

With Graeme Murty’s kids in the semi-finals now of the Challenge Cup, the rise of this former Chelsea lad from promising youth to increasingly talented teenage Rangers playmaker is obvious for anyone to see.

Of course, he’s only 16, but the quality on display from the boy, who scored v Wrexham incidentally, is clearly of a level which, if he can translate it to the senior stage, suggests Rangers have something very special on their hands.

Let’s not pressure him, naturally – it would be damaging to expect the next Lionel Messi here. Gilmour, for example has been at Chelsea for two and a half years and made just two senior appearances, despite being well into his 19th year.

And this, of course, is a club managed by a legend of the game who himself was barely 20 when Chelsea brought him to Stamford Bridge, so he knows what it takes to succeed at a young age at such a club, while, bearing in mind that Lampard is unable to sign any senior players due to Chelsea’s transfer ban.

Breaking through is tough.

But that all said, NYC is certainly the business at the youth levels – his contribution to the side seems to have elevated the youngsters and his talent in the final third is extremely impressive.

He has also scored at a continental level in the Uefa Youth League as well as against Celtic, so there’s no denying he’s not a flash in the pan.

He’s been impressing us all since he arrived and we do start to wonder just how long before there are serious calls for this talented lad to get a sniff of the senior squad.
