A growing problem few would have noticed v Hibs…

Ross McCrorie made all the headlines last weekend for his ‘curious’ cameo in goal. He didn’t have to do too much, mercifully, but sadly Allan McGregor’s inexplicable moment of madness meant Rangers were down a keeper having used all three substitutes.

But for us, this was not the biggest crime of the day. It was the fact McCrorie’s appearance between the sticks overshadowed what had been an impeccable performance as DM from 80 minutes until the 90th when McGregor’s lunacy kicked in, pun firmly intended.

The Academy graduate, for the 10 minutes he got, did everything in his power to give Steven Gerrard a real problem – not a ball wasted, barely a tackle missed (one dubious foul on 86 minutes) and plenty of harrying, hussling, and good pressing especially on Omeonga.

He looked very, very good, a young player eager to take the opportunity to stake a claim as to why he should play more.

It is true that he isn’t as comfortable in possession as Glen Kamara is, and he isn’t exactly creative, but for the pure dirty work in deep midfield of ensuring opponents are never given time and are never comfortable, Ross McCrorie is as good as anyone in the SPL.

It is just such a shame a near-impeccable performance as a sub got completely overlooked because he had to deputise in goal.

We are very lucky to have a player of his quality as squad depth – he really is knocking on the first team door.

We will suggest a warning though. The less game time he gets next season, the more likely it may become that he may seek a move out. Gerrard has managed McCrorie fairly well this season, but those knocks on the door will get louder.

It’s a decent problem to have though.
