Dramatic axe appears to fall for Rangers regular

Ever since Rangers early season defensive issues appeared solved thanks to the partnership between Connor Goldson and Nikola Katic, Rangers supporters have been endlessly frustrated both by the breakup of that and Steven Gerrard’s bizarre preference for Joe Worrall.

Indeed, Worrall has been the stopper of choice this season, with supporters launching #FreeKatic tags on social networks, trying to get their heads around the Croat international’s sudden loss of favour.

However, suddenly, since the Fir Park stroll, Katic has found himself first choice again seemingly and has done himself every justice, albeit his performances haven’t been miraculous.

Which leaves the question; what’s happened with Joe Worrall?

Up till Fir Park the Forest man was essentially first-choice alongside Goldson – indeed 21 appearances in the league and 31 total this season is testament to that.

But from nowhere he finds himself axed and the fan favourite is now back in the team.

Not that we’re complaining – it’s an axe we’ve ground all season, and Katic did absolutely nothing to deserve his demotion to the bench, but it is very sudden and it’s come out of nowhere.

Could it be Gerrard preparing for life without him as the 22-year old returns to Forest? Is there something contractual now that ‘prevents’ the City Ground man now from playing any further?

Was Katic promised this period of the season back in the team?

Who knows. All we know is the past two matches have seen a welcome return for the ever-popular Katic, and most fans seem pretty happy about that.

We know we are.
