“Not for us” – assessing the contenders for Rangers’ POTY

So we’ve mentioned the POTY noms in passing today, and in this piece we’re going to go through them all and make our personal call. How many assessments do you agree with?

Allan McGregor:

A legitimate winner already before the nominations were announced, McGregor was the best signing last summer and he wasn’t even technically by Gerrard. Bringing the best Rangers goalie since Goram (even surpassing Klos in our opinion) back was a masterstroke and he’s repaid a great deal of the past misdemeanours by sheer performances. Some stupendous saves this season, McGregor is a worthy nomination and would be a very valid winner.

James Tavernier:

His stats are beyond denial but he’s by no means a universally-loved player – Tavernier’s captaincy remains a topic of division due to his lack of leadership, and his defending at best is patchy. His assists and goals are tremendous and he definitely has an ardent core base of support among our fans, but the fact our straw poll recently indicated only one reply of dozens/hundreds would have him win the honour rather makes the point for us.

Ryan Jack:

He’s had, overall, a very, very good season. Some titanic displays from maybe one of the most improved players under Steven Gerrard, Jack has become a justified starter and has even evolved his game into central and attacking midfield with great success. Not too many would be outraged if he won the award overall.

Ryan Kent:

Not for us. Regulars to the site will know we have a huge amount of time for Kent, but unfortunately while his superb displays absolutely dazzle us, he’s had many more average ones. Can’t play with Barisic and missed two months+ through injury. He’s currently on a bit of a lull, but that’s not why we wouldn’t give him the prize. He’s been stonking at times, but hasn’t done it anywhere near enough. A reluctant no, for us.

Alfredo Morelos:

Again, just no. No argument about his stats and contribution when in the zone, but way way too many Mr Hyde displays from Morelos, appalling discipline and petulance plus the inescapable fact he can’t seem to deliver enough on the big stage. We love this kid when he’s in the mood, but when he isn’t he’s an empty jersey and a complete liability.
