Are Rangers yet to make January’s big signing?

The past 10 days have been heaven for us Rangers fans. Winning the Old Firm comfortably was followed by securing four significant signatures – two massive ones, two very decent ones.

So it’s safe to say morale is pretty high right now – but claims are being made that January’s window work is far from over, and indeed the ‘best is yet to come’.

In short, it is being posited that Steven Davis and Jermain Defoe are NOT the marquee winter signings for Steven Gerrard, and someone very special is on the horizon still.

Is this realistic?

It must be remembered that Rangers haven’t spent a penny this window – two loans and two pre-contracts don’t suggest powerful spending to get our man. It’s living within our means, and that’s fair enough, but it’s harder to sign top players at this time of the year without forking out.

But it’s what Rangers have done so far – and we know Steven Gerrard will be supported with a budget, albeit a limited one, and we would realistically suggest the funds are there for one big signing like the price of a Connor Goldson. AKA around £3M, if the right player comes up.

And who could that be? What positions do Rangers need strengthened? Attack currently has Alfredo Morelos (for now), Kyle Lafferty and Jermain Defoe, plus Ryan Hardie should Gerrard recall him.

Wings are filled with Ryan Kent, Daniel Candeias, Jordan Jones this summer, Glenn Middleton and Eros Grezda.

The creative midfield section comprises of Steven Davis and Carlos Pena, with a returning Graham Dorrans imminent too.

Central midfield boasts Scott Arfield, Lassana Coulibaly, Glen Kamara this summer and possibly Davis again.

Defensive midfield sees Ryan Jack, Ross McCrorie and Jordan Rossiter while defence is imbued with Joe Worrall, Nikola Katic, Gareth McAuley and Connor Goldson.

Last but not least fullback is filled with Jon Flanagan, Andy Halliday, Borna Barisic and Lee Wallace.

Do any of these critically need supplements? We’d have to argue the one position that isn’t convincing remains AM. Steven Davis, as good a player as he is, is not a lockpick. And we can’t rely on Graham Dorrans’ fitness in there either, while Carlos Pena is as good as a busted flush.

The one position Rangers do need someone in is genuine playmaker – a maestro of vision and flair, which is something we have lacked consistently for some time.

Such players aren’t cheap, and a youth player like Ejaria are duds because it needs immediate experience and maturity, not a developing kid who doesn’t know how to read the attack or how to pick out a pass.

To get what we’d need Gerrard would need upwards of £3M or a smart loan deal for a 25+ year old who’s out of favour at his current club.

Why does the name Scott Allan spring to mind…
