“Robbed” – Stevie Ger makes surprising claim about Dundee

Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has made a surprising admission in suggesting sponsors’ MOTM Scott Arfield didn’t deserve the award and it should have gone instead to RTV’s choice of Ryan Kent.

Speaking after the match, Gerrard confirmed how well Arfield had played, but made the curious claim that Kent was ‘robbed’ of it and the award, like RTVs, should have been given to the Liverpool loanee.

He said to the official site:

“I think Scotty Arfield has robbed man of the match from him there. I thought Ryan was certainly that while he was on the pitch.”

It’s a curious thing to say about such an award, that the winner was unworthy of it. It’s probably the kind of comment a manager inexperienced in the job might mistakenly utter, because both players were magnificent and we have heard some small criticisms from some quarters of the support that Gerrard has a bad habit of singling players out for praise which might be a slight oversight on his part.

And doing it at the expense of another one is probably not the best move, but there’s no denying Gerrard has mostly spoken extremely well, albeit with a few little gaffes here and there.

He remains a learning manager and this is probably the kind of comment he might do well to take care not to emulate.

There is also the nagging suspicion that Gerrard has an especially preferential soft spot for the Liverpool loanees too – which is admittedly perfectly fine as long as they play well. And Kent certainly is right now.
