Does multimillion pound Rangers bid explain huge summer Ibrox deal?

Today’s breaking news from the Express that Brighton are set to make a bid for James Tavernier sheds significant light on the signing of Borna Barisic.

The EPL outfit have been monitoring the ex-Newcastle fullback for months and Rangers are presumably aware of it – assuming the bid is good enough, and we’d imagine several million will be required, and the club captain will move on.

While Tavernier was indeed promoted to captain only a number of weeks ago, the signing of Barisic on top of Jon Flanagan for the left back berth was more than a touch puzzling – as Ibrox Noise covered yesterday.

While we want as many good players as we can get, regardless of position, this one did seem curious given the scenarios it threw up with regards Barisic, Flanagan and Tavernier’s selection.

But if a good bid for Tavernier arrives, and the deal is agreeable to the fullback, the EPL might just be too much of a lure and it would completely resolve the selection issue while explaining just why Steven Gerrard secured another top class left back.

England’s transfer window shuts tomorrow, so any bid for the 26-year old would have to be pretty swift, but we equally wonder who would replace him as captain.

More as we get it on this one.
