Rangers lose out on big January target – confirmed

It has been confirmed today that January target Louis Moult will join Preston North-End in a £500,000 deal.

Alex Neil seized the chance to take Rangers’ big January interest and has paid up, leaving Rangers to lose out on yet another quality player fans were eager to see arrive in Govan.

Moult has been one of the stand out SPL performers of the past two seasons, and had been viewed as a natural successor to Kenny Miller, but Neil has stolen a march on Rangers (and Celtic) by snapping up the striker, leaving Rangers back at square one to supplement a stuttering attack.

Moult had been linked to Govan ever since ex-manager Pedro Caixinha was pictured scouting him at Hampden earlier this year, and with the Englishman’s record, and competence in the SPL, the notion of his capture was a high priority.

But sadly Preston have got in there first and Moult will move back down south, and depressingly Rangers were unable to compete with even a half a million package.

Rangers’ striker options are Alfredo Morelos and that appears to be it. Kenny Miller will be out for some time with a hamstring, Eduardo Herrera has been dreadful and will leave in January, and the only other options are the inconsistent Josh Windass and the unfancied Ryan Hardie.

Moult would have been a solid addition to this, but sadly it is not to be.

Questions are already being asked of Director of Football Mark Allen and his role in this, and one has to wonder exactly what the point of bringing him in was.
