Rangers join race to sign U21 defender

According to the Sunday Express, Rangers have joined Celtic in the race for Dundee Utd’s promising young U21 defender John Souttar.

As covered on Ibroxnoise.co.uk, Rangers are most definitely in January’s transfer market for a defender, such is the lack of cover in that position, with only Tottenham Hotspur’s on loan stopper Dominic Ball available for depth in the central berth at the back.

Souttar, 19, is a product of Brechin’s youth academy and is an established youth international, with almost 20 caps at the various age ranks for the national team, and having made almost 50 appearances for the Arabs since his switch to Tannadice two years ago certainly does not find himself out of his depth at SPL level.

Utd have famously struggled this season, however, making a move out a slightly more tempting prospect for a starlet such as Souttar, but Rangers lost out last time they went head to head with Celtic for a player and Warburton would find the going tough to persuade Souttar to join Rangers in the Championship.

But as the Magic Hat has said, he only wants players who want to play at Ibrox.
