Warburton: “This Rangers player is proving me right”

Mark Warburton believes striker Martyn Waghorn is slowly but surely proving his indispensability to Rangers with increasingly impressive displays and a growing goals’ tally.

While 6 of his 11 goals have admittedly come from the spot, Rangers’ well-documented search for a 20+ goal a season man may already have found its target with Waggy into double figures well before October starts in earnest, and Warburton believes his faith in the former Wigan man is being proven:

“I said right at the very start Martyn needs to play games and he’s doing that and will get better and better. He beats himself up many times when he misses chances and he’s creating and working hard right, left, centre. I’m delighted for him and he’ll get more goals this season.”

While Waghorn has not exploded onto the scene as an obviously clinical striker, 11 for the season so far is an excellent return and if this former Leicester forward is to prove his manager correct and score many more Rangers might not require the double-figures striker in January many foresaw the need for.

As expressed on this site and by the manager, a major quality the frontman has is the ability to graft deeper and harder, with it being evident after only a few matches that his deep-lying work ethic and support play was as important to the overall team’s fortunes as any goals were.

The fact he is adding to his tally match-by-match is testament to Warburton’s faith in bringing him to Ibrox.
