Rangers have rejected several overtures from Spain and Germany for winger Djeidi Gassama. This is after it had been believed he would be leaving for continental climes. The left winger, signed from Sheffield Wednesday, had been a mainstay under previous manager Danny Rohl, but a little more in and out of the side under new coach Derek McInnes. It had been believed that he would be a potential target for other sides, but it is understood, according to The Rangers Review, that Rangers block Gassama exit.

Rangers block Djeidi Gassama exit

Rather than him rejecting overtures from suitor clubs, Rangers have outright rejected any notion of selling him and he will not be allowed to leave. This is a very curious development, as per Tuesday at lunchtime. Put simply, Gassama is one who divides Rangers fans considerably. At times he shows talent and pace, but his decision making has been diabolically inconsistent, to say the absolute least. The former Owls winger is one that has been regarded as expendable by a great number of supporters.

The fact that Rangers, however, have rejected what have been said to be around £6M or £7M bids and interest in his services from continental shores does suggest one of two things. Either the scouting department believes that Gassama is one for the future, or Derek McInnes truly rates him.

Gassama and Rabbi Matondo similarities

It is widely regarded that there are huge similarities between him and long departed Rabbi Matondo: fast pace, good control on the ball, but appalling decision making and, of course, the well known selfish angle. The oft noted situation whereby, instead of picking out a wise pass, he instead goes it alone.

This was never more notable than against Aberdeen at the weekend. Instead of squaring it for an easy finish for Shankland, Gassama decided to go alone and wasted the chance entirely. This did not go down well with travelling or onlooking supporters.

Danny Rohl and RB Salzburg speculation

There was also the notion that former manager Danny Rohl was interested in taking him to Austria for his new side RB Salzburg. This never came to anything and, as far as we understand, the interest was nothing more than speculation.

Rohl did, of course, manage him at Sheffield Wednesday, although he did not sign him. Then, of course, he managed him at Rangers, but again did not sign him. However, he would have been his recruiting manager had Gassama gone to Austria.

Rangers appear to rate Gassama highly

But as it stands, it appears that Gassama is staying at Rangers. Rangers appear to view him much more highly than the fans do, even though some supporters believe there is potential in the lad.

Then again, the same fans probably thought there was potential in Rabbi Matondo, so it is neither here nor there. But what is definite now, it appears, is that Rangers block Gassama exit. Meaning Gassama is staying at Rangers, whatever he himself wants.
