If there is one thing that Derek McInnes will be deeply, deeply relieved about, it is his exit from Russell Martin territory. Rangers’ former manager is a byword for ignominy after having won just one league match in his entire spell at Rangers. Admittedly, he wasn’t at Ibrox for very long, but just one win in seven matches pretty much nailed the coffin on the former Southampton manager’s Ibrox tenure.

McInnes escapes Martin territory

The reason this topic has, of course, come up again is that Martin has made an absolutely catastrophic start for new club Leicester, after having lost 4-0 with a dismal performance. His position at the King Power Stadium already looks extremely shaky. But the big deal for Rangers fans is that Derek McInnes’s third match victory in a row in the league, along with five wins in the last six in all competitions, takes him firmly away from ignominy in terms of the Russell Martin reputation at Ibrox.

Martin is a byword for toxicity at the club. Of course, we will not forget the fact he did get past two Champions League qualifier ties. Let’s not forget that he wasn’t an absolute total failure on all levels at Ibrox. But in the league, which is the bread and butter, he was Rangers’ worst ever manager. McInnes was getting perilously close to that kind of territory and, in the early days, his stats were worse even than Martin’s.

McInnes turns things around

But the last few weeks have hugely improved McInnes’s lot and he’s firmly out of that kind of ignominious company. Instead, it’s the poor Leicester fans who are dealing with that kind of territory with the absolutely hapless start that Martin has made.

Russell Martin is a hilarious individual who continuously blags his way into jobs he has no business being in, only to then get fired by the said clubs and get a payoff which runs into the millions. He is a very smart man for getting rich quick. He is brilliant at the gab, superb at convincing the corporate goons at club board level that he is the right man for that job. And then inevitably, he gets sacked with a payoff of several million pounds to get much wealthier in the pocket.

Martin’s remarkable knack

It’s a very fun scam the guy has got going and you have to say fair play to him for doing it this well for this long. And many have made a quip about the fact that he happens to have Lucy Pinder on his arm as well, which seems to be a thumbs up for many. Probably the wrong expression, but you get the sense.

Nevertheless, the fact is that Russell Martin is failing miserably yet again, but Derek McInnes has started to turn things round at Ibrox. Being third in the league under his management, having won three in a row now, is definitely a far bigger improvement. He’s long, long past the Martin territory with the way things are now currently going.

The next three are the real test

But of course, the next three matches are a huge litmus test to see how progress actually goes.
