Just when Lawrence Shankland had finally announced himself as a Rangers player, the footballing gods have dealt the Ibrox captain an absolutely brutal blow. The striker limped out of Saturday’s victory over Motherwell after just eight minutes and the initial fears were bad. Unfortunately, those fears have only grown since. Rangers now face the prospect of losing their captain for virtually the remainder of 2026 after the Lawrence Shankland injury turned into one of the biggest blows Derek McInnes could possibly have suffered.

Rangers face a huge Shankland injury absence

McInnes immediately confirmed after the Motherwell victory that Shankland had suffered a hamstring problem in a similar area to the injury which previously kept him out for around three months at Hearts. Rangers confirmed the initial hamstring injury after Motherwell

Indeed, the Rangers manager knew immediately that this did not look like a minor pull. Shankland himself recognised the feeling and Rangers arranged a scan to establish the damage. STV reported McInnes’s initial concerns over the injury

Now the prognosis looks absolutely horrible.

Reports put the expected recovery period at around 12 to 14 weeks. Consequently, even the more optimistic end of that timescale would take Shankland towards December.

However, Rangers cannot simply circle a date on the calendar and expect their captain to start immediately.

Cruel injury timing for the Rangers captain

The timing makes this situation particularly heartbreaking.

Only days earlier, Shankland had finally produced the performance Rangers supporters desperately wanted. He scored two outstanding goals against Falkirk and suddenly looked like the striker Ibrox had waited to see. Ibrox Noise looked at Shankland finally finding his Rangers form

After a difficult start at Rangers, everything suddenly appeared to click.

Then disaster struck.

Therefore, the Lawrence Shankland injury feels especially cruel. This is a boyhood Rangers supporter who finally secured his dream move to Ibrox this summer. Moreover, McInnes subsequently handed him the Rangers captaincy. Rangers officially confirmed Shankland as first team captain

Shankland had endured criticism over his early performances. However, he finally started answering those critics with goals. Indeed, Ibrox Noise had previously examined exactly where things had gone wrong for Shankland before his dramatic improvement.

Now he could conceivably miss the entire remainder of the calendar year.

McInnes must find another solution aside Shankland

Rangers at least prepared themselves better than they might have done.

Youssef Chermiti already suffered a devastating injury earlier this season and Ibrox Noise examined the implications of losing another Rangers striker.

Therefore, Kevin Kelsy becomes hugely important.

Ryan Naderi also responded brilliantly against Motherwell. He entered the match following Shankland’s injury and scored the winner within minutes. Nevertheless, Rangers now need consistency rather than isolated contributions.

Bojan Miovski remains another option, although McInnes has hardly demonstrated overwhelming faith in him.

Furthermore, the criticism surrounding Shankland before his recent goals had already generated plenty of debate. Ally McCoist publicly challenged some of the criticism aimed at the Rangers striker.

However, replacing Shankland now involves much more than replacing a striker.

Rangers lose goals and leadership from Lawrence Shankland

Rangers have lost their captain.

They have lost an experienced Scotland international. More importantly, they have temporarily lost a player who finally appeared ready to become the focal point of McInnes’s Rangers attack.

The Lawrence Shankland injury therefore affects considerably more than team selection.

McInnes must now decide who leads Rangers on the pitch while Shankland recovers. Meanwhile, somebody else must provide the goals which the former Hearts captain had suddenly started delivering.

Of course, Rangers will hope rehabilitation progresses perfectly and Shankland beats the expected timetable.

However, hamstrings demand caution and Rangers cannot afford another setback by rushing him.

For Shankland personally, this must feel absolutely desperate. He waited years for his Rangers move. He became captain of the club he supported and finally started scoring the goals Ibrox demanded.

Then, just as his Rangers career truly began, his hamstring stopped him in his tracks.

If the 12 to 14 week prognosis proves accurate, we may have seen the last of the Rangers captain at Ibrox in 2026.

That is desperately cruel.
