Outside of the review of the transfer window Ibrox Noise offered today, where does it leave Derek McInnes Rangers backing?
Rangers’ manager has found a little breathing space of late, securing two wins in a row after a horrific start, leading to 4 wins of his past 5 matches. This is definitely more acceptable than the dismal beginning.
However, Rangers remain midtable, and Cavenagh and co. have just spent around £40M, a Scottish record in any one window.
McInnes backing from owners
This means that despite the questions of the quality of the acquisitions, Rangers’ owners will expect results.
You cannot chuck around £40M at player signings and get away with not winning anything.
Rangers have sacked manager after manager in recent years after big spending for little reward.
Only in January Danny Rohl spent £12M on Naderi, Chucky and Rommens – and while not sacked, you’re judged on your results. And his sucked. He also brought in Andy Skov Olsen who was unfortunately one of Rangers’ biggest-ever flops. FYI ASO already has one assist in 3 appearances in Turkey.
But Derek McInnes really has had backing.
So the pressure on the Rangers manager, which was already intense, is now bigger due to the staggering overhaul this summer.
And so it should be. Rangers’ hierarchy will back this manager, but they will expect a return.
You can’t spend £8.5M on Minsu, £9.5M on Kelsy and £6M on Pandur without expecting a bit back from that.
Rangers have no Europe now. McInnes’ dire management ensured that.
Which means the full focus is all about the league. He has the ‘unique’ opportunity of having no midweek distractions and a £40M backing this summer to make something happen.
After all fans, ourselves included, melted at how awful things were, and blamed McInnes for it, victories are the currency of football.
If Del starts delivering them, and the owners will expect that with Derek McInnes Rangers backing, he’ll win a lot of doubters over.
The floor is yours, Derek.
