Rangers have identified Portland Timbers striker Kevin Kelsy as a potential replacement for the injured Youssef Chermiti. However, neither Rangers nor Portland have officially confirmed contact, negotiations or an offer. Rangers target Kevin Kelsy interest comes from a Daily Record report, subsequently carried by the Scottish Sun.
Rangers need another centre forward after Chermiti suffered a serious knee injury against Hibernian. That development compounded the club’s questionable decision to reject a reported £25 million Galatasaray offer shortly before the injury. It also created another damaging chapter in an already difficult double transfer setback for Rangers.
Kelsy stands 6 feet 4 inches tall and represents Venezuela at international level. The powerful 22 year old currently plays for Portland and has scored nine goals in 17 MLS appearances during 2026. His form clearly attracts Rangers, who want a forward with strength, pace and the ability to lead attacks.
Portland acquired Kelsy permanently from Shakhtar Donetsk in January 2025. According to the official MLS transfer announcement, the deal reportedly cost close to $6 million. He signed through December 2028, while Portland also hold an option for 2029. His official Portland Timbers profile therefore shows why any Rangers move could require a substantial transfer fee.
He also made 5 appearances in the Champions League with Donetsk, managing a goal back in September 2023.
Kelsy previously spent the 2024 campaign on loan with FC Cincinnati. He scored six MLS goals there before Portland secured him permanently. He has since developed into Portland’s leading scorer and recorded a career best MLS return during the current season.
Rangers have already ruled out an approach for Ryan One, as Ibrox Noise reported. Rangers target Kevin Kelsy represents a younger and more physically imposing alternative with stronger recent form. Nevertheless, reports currently establish only that Rangers are considering him. They do not yet confirm a bid, talks with Portland or an agreement with the player.
