Rangers continue to dominate the transfer conversation on Sunday, with James Penrice confirmed and several other players linked with Ibrox moves. However, the club still appears some distance from securing the attacking reinforcements Derek McInnes desperately requires.
Penrice completes Rangers move
Rangers have completed the signing of James Penrice from AEK Athens. The former Hearts left back has joined on a season long loan with an option to buy.
Rangers accelerated the deal after Tuur Rommens suffered an injury which could keep him out for around eight weeks. Penrice could make his debut against St Mirren today.
Meanwhile, Club Brugge reportedly hold an interest in Rommens. However, Rangers have received no confirmed offer and his current injury should make an immediate departure unlikely.
Rangers also considered another move for Brentford defender Jayden Meghoma. Nevertheless, Penrice was apparently McInnes’ preferred option. Club Brugge have also ironically shown interest in Meghoma.
McInnes demands more additions
Despite signing Penrice, McInnes reportedly wants at least five more players before the transfer window closes. Rangers still require another central defender, a right back, a creative midfielder, a left winger and a striker.
Aston Villa right back Kosta Nedeljkovic remains under consideration. Rangers have explored a deal for the Serbian international, although nothing appears close.
The club also approached Cercle Brugge regarding Hugo Siquet. However, the Belgian club reportedly considers the defender untouchable and would demand a significantly larger offer.
Attacking search continues
Kevin Kelsy remains one of the leading candidates to replace the injured Youssef Chermiti. Reports claim Rangers submitted an offer worth around $10M, approximately £7.5M, for the Portland Timbers striker.
However, Portland remain reluctant to sell the Venezuelan. Therefore, Rangers may need to increase their offer or consider another target.
Sheffield United youngster Ryan One remains another possibility. Rangers reportedly proposed an initial loan move, but United rejected that approach. Discussions could continue, although One would represent potential rather than a proven replacement.
Fares Ghedjemis has also returned to the conversation after Rangers abandoned their move for Couhaib Driouech. Rangers previously offered around £8M for the Algerian winger, but Frosinone reportedly wanted between €15M and €20M. No fresh bid has emerged today.
Ferguson opens transfer door
Finally, Lewis Ferguson has revealed that he would listen if Rangers made a concrete proposal.
Rangers previously contacted Bologna about the Scotland midfielder. However, the Italian club reportedly value him at approximately £17M. That figure places Ferguson well beyond Rangers’ normal spending range.
Consequently, Penrice represents the only concrete development in today’s transfer coverage. Rangers retain an interest in several players, but none of the remaining deals appears particularly advanced. With the window moving quickly, McInnes still needs considerable support before Rangers can claim to possess a properly balanced squad.
