Once again us Rangers fans find ourselves licking our wounds after yet another horrible 90 minutes saw our side fall to a well-organised Polish outfit whose name we still can’t pronounce. Derek McInnes’ Rangers dire showing was painful.
Only the most optimistic fan had a good feeling when looking at Derek McInnes’ maiden Rangers’ Euro XI selection, which really did take the biscuit as far as farcical lineups go.
Not only was the captain inexplicably benched, but the clearly subpar Dan Neil was confirmed as vice captain and started this one with the armband.
Selections
Then the further damage emerged. Ross McCrorie, who can’t play RB, was selected in that slot. Dujon Sterling subsequently found himself partnering Emmanuel Fernandez in a defensive duo beaten only by Ben Davies and Leon King for rubbishness. Tuur Rommens at LB tried his hardest but was weighed down by the horrendous combination next to him.
In midfield McInnes couldn’t have picked a worse three. The abysmal Tochi Chukwuani, the hopeless Dan Neil, and the abysmal Mohamed Diomande. That is probably the worst possible trio in the middle.
Only Aasgaard could make this worse, so he was duly selected beside on-a-hiding-for-nothing Daisuke Yokota and the diabolical Youssef Chermiti.
Literally every single thing about this XI was wrong on a level both Russell Martin and Danny Rohl would be proud of, and while Rangers inexplicably took the lead, it didn’t last long.
Hosts
The hosts were by miles the superior side and ran out comfortable 2-1 winners against a truly disorganised and shambolic Rangers.
It’s ridiculous to ‘blame’ Derek McInnes and indeed there are some conspiracy theories floating around, but the XI was shocking, the performance worse, and while the subs did see a speck of improvement as Findlay Curtis worked his socks off alongside Cammy Devlin, it still fell well short. And Derek McInnes’ Rangers dire showing was painful to witness.
See, Ibrox Noise expected pain this season. We were not expecting 56, in all honesty.
But when we lose we want it because the players just weren’t good enough on the day. NOT because most of them were out of position and the blatantly wrong selections.
McInnes’ starting lineup, as against Dundee Utd, was horrendous. We don’t care much for his excuses already, he picks the team and he sure picks the captains.
Succeed
We like him. Ibrox Noise wants him to succeed.
But this rubbish is so below what Rangers fans expect and it’s not what we expect from our Rangers manager.
This was excruciating to watch on every level and the only upside is there’s just a single goal in it.
