As Ibrox Noise reported some weeks ago, Rangers had agreed a deal with Botafogo of Brazil to ship Danilo out. We were, of course, concerned at the time that it was not going to be a permanent deal, but potentially a loan. We could not be sure of that one until information came to us around a week ago. It would indeed be a loan, and we, of course, reported that to you as well. But Danilo Rangers big catch is now revealed.
Rangers confirm Danilo loan
Rangers finally confirmed the exit of Danilo to the Brazilian outfit yesterday with the confirmed loan. However, the condition attached to the information is a tad disconcerting. The situation regarding Danilo’s loan is not an option to buy, which in itself slightly disquieted us. However, it is a conditional obligation.
Conditional obligation explained
Now, this is a very interesting distinction. Option to buy simply means that, if the player impresses, the loaning club has first option on signing him permanently. Rangers had an obligation to buy with Mohamed Diomande. This involved a loan contract, but purchase became mandatory at the end of it regardless of performance. A conditional obligation for Danilo is a halfway house between the two. It is obviously the very best that Rangers could get here.
We cannot be sure what the conditions for the obligation are, but clearly we have to hope Danilo fulfils them. That makes it very much like an option to buy. We are sure, and we hope, that Rangers got those conditions easily attainable. However, we will remain in the dark about the exact clause and contract details. That will remain the case unless the agent, either club, a representative or indeed the player himself reveals the truth.
Danilo could return to Ibrox
The issue Rangers fans have here is that Danilo could well fail these conditions. He could very much end up back at Ibrox next summer with still another year left on his contract. Danilo, of course, signed up long term. Rangers gave him an astonishing five year contract at the £40,000 a week mark. Consequently, Rangers do not want to set him up to fail the conditions required for the obligatory purchase.
We could only guess that it is appearance-based. If he makes at least 25 appearances, or a similar number, there will be an obligation to purchase. This does, of course, mean that if he does not impress, the potentially purchasing team can simply leave him on the bench. Therefore, they would never trigger the condition.
Rangers face a familiar contractual risk
That happens many times with players on permanent contracts who have conditions attached to those deals. It means they end up sidelined because the club does not want to spend any more money on that player. We have seen many cases of players consigned to the dugout because another appearance would trigger a particular conditional bonus payment clause. Danilo Rangers big catch is obvious.
Danilo could very much be in that boat too. We are hoping not. Whatever this conditional clause or conditional obligation may be, it certainly puts Rangers on a bit of a weak footing. We very much hope that the club has negotiated a highly attainable conditional clause which will likely be executed. Otherwise, Danilo will almost certainly be back next summer.
