Rangers have reportedly opened talks with Coventry City over a season long loan for Jahnoah Markelo. Derek McInnes urgently needs another winger as the Rangers transfer policy continues to evolve. Therefore, this approach makes sense. The 23 year old offers pace, direct running and experience across several European leagues. The Rangers Jahnoah Markelo transfer could now give the Ibrox squad another much needed option on the right.
Rangers target Coventry winger
Markelo joined Coventry from FC Zürich in January 2026. However, the Suriname international struggled for regular football as Frank Lampard led the Sky Blues into the Premier League. Meanwhile, Rangers continue to strengthen elsewhere and appear ready to add another defender.
He played five Championship matches after arriving in England. Consequently, Coventry could allow him to leave temporarily so he can secure consistent senior football. Rangers also need movement elsewhere, although Derek McInnes recently addressed the Nico Raskin transfer situation.
Rangers want a season long loan rather than a permanent transfer. Coventry reportedly paid around £4.3 million for him, although the club officially described the fee as undisclosed. His contract runs until June 2030, so Coventry retain complete control over his immediate future.
Jahnoah Markelo value and stats
Transfermarkt currently values Markelo at €3.5 million, which equals roughly £3 million. However, Football Transfers places his estimated value between €2 million and €3.1 million.
Markelo produced his strongest form with FC Zürich. He scored six goals and supplied eight assists across 43 appearances for the Swiss club. Furthermore, he recorded two goals and three assists across 14 Swiss Super League matches during the first half of last season.
Those numbers do not scream superstar. Nevertheless, they show a young winger who can create chances and contribute goals when a manager gives him regular minutes. McInnes continues to discuss new Rangers signings and possible departures.
A well travelled young career
Markelo developed in the Ajax academy before continuing his education with Twente. He then joined Go Ahead Eagles and made his Eredivisie breakthrough.
However, he needed to leave the Netherlands to secure meaningful first team opportunities. The winger moved to Croatian side Kustošija and scored seven league goals in 18 appearances. He then briefly joined Celje before FC Zürich recruited him in 2024.
Therefore, the Rangers Jahnoah Markelo transfer would bring another player with a varied football education to Glasgow. He has already experienced Dutch, Croatian, Slovenian, Swiss and English football.
Rangers have already strengthened their midfield after announcing Dan Neil as a new Ibrox signing. Moreover, McInnes reunited with another familiar player when Rangers completed the arrival of Cammy Devlin.
Does Markelo improve Rangers?
Markelo plays primarily from the right despite favouring his left foot. As a result, he can cut inside and attack central areas. He also creates chances, carries the ball effectively and attempts ambitious dribbles.
However, Rangers supporters should keep expectations realistic. Coventry used him sparingly and Rangers need proven creativity immediately. Oliver Antman and Djeidi Gassama cannot carry the entire wide threat at Ibrox.
Even so, a loan would limit the financial risk. McInnes could assess Markelo in Scottish football without committing another large fee. Therefore, the Rangers Jahnoah Markelo transfer represents a sensible squad move, although Rangers may still need one more established winger.
