So finally, at long last, Rangers have confirmed the signing of Cammy Devlin.

Now, one speck of intrigue is that ‘ScotsportX’ (formerly FitbaZone) claimed this transfer had been done weeks ago. That account has now gone yet again, having changed their name many times. But they appear to have got this one correct even if there’s no sign of the James Penrice exclusive doing likewise.

The account either changing its name yet again or being deleted probably about sums up its credibility.

But this is getting away from signing Devlin…

An Aussie international with 5 caps, he was an absolute standout for Hearts last season. Why he didn’t play any minutes for the Socceroos in USA you’d need to ask their coach, but Devlin was a huge huge part of Hearts’ title push.

What kind of player is he?

Think Connor Barron. Kevin Thomson. Think that gritty school of hard-working engine-room defender. The guy that does all the dirty work so the polished composers around him can flourish.

As far as harassing, grit, legwork and all the other dogsbody jobs in midfield goes, Devlin was the Premiership’s number one last season.

Alas, the one truly bad afternoon he had was against Celtic on the final day when it just didn’t happen for him. Sadly that probably played a role in giving Celtic the undeserved title.

But Devlin is a workhorse.

Few in the top flight have his level of graft and dig, and he’s very much going to be a big part of Derek McInnes’ side going forward.

He was number one in the whole league for tackles, ground duels won, fourth for total duels.

When it comes to the hard work he’s fantastic. He’s not a Barry Ferguson, he’s a Kevin Thomson. And Rangers need hard workers. We’ve really lacked such things for a long time.
