There were rumours in the last 12 to 24 hours that a new Rangers signing is imminent. Ibrox Noise cannot verify this story, but the story claims that a mystery new man has been signed and sealed and will be announced by around about Friday. Whether that story is true or not, we cannot quite fathom why Rangers would be signing more players at the moment, with an overbloated squad which requires thinning first.
Rangers still need to trim the squad
Derek McInnes has been very clear that some players need to move on. He has not explicitly gone with the story that most press have derived of having to sell before we can buy, but logically that is sound. Rangers do need to sell, or at least ship players out, to get them off the roster and open new slots for new blood. Just signing new players now does seem a little bit odd.
Midfield remains overcrowded
As we have mentioned before, there is definitely a midfield problem with an overbloat in that area. However, in general, the squad needs to be thinned out. Far too many hangers on who contribute nothing still have not been sorted.
We know that John Souttar, Danilo and Clinton Nsiala are all set to move on. These will at least thin the herd a little bit. Unfortunately, in Souttar’s case, it leaves us only with two defenders at the back, which is not ideal.
Time will tell
Simply put, Rangers need to get rid of and sell before they can sign. However, that has not stopped the rumours claiming that there will be a new addition. If there indeed is one, then Rangers’ strategy at the moment is not overly clear. It might be hit and hope of signing the players that we want and hoping we can get rid of the ones that we do not need. However, time will tell, and we do not think the club would be that careless.
We will see who does indeed come in over the coming weeks. More importantly, we will get rid as soon as possible of the stuff that we do not need and that does not want to be here. That really is case critical at this point.
