In something of a revelation and proof that, yes, even Ibrox Noise can be ‘wrong’ now and again, Findlay Curtis has cleared up a big issue.
Many fans praised Danny Rohl for loaning Curtis out, with the move becoming the making of the playmaker, while Ibrox Noise was critical, suggesting that the move hurt Rangers and helped Kilmarnock. And that it showed a lack of judgement of the part of the former Ibrox coach.
But Curtis has confirmed the truth, as always, is a little in the middle.
He has revealed he actually pushed for the loan out, and wasn’t pushed into it by Rohl.
This offers two conclusions:
1: That it was Curtis himself who made the choice to develop at Killie, and wasn’t axed by Rohl into the move.
2: That Rohl still didn’t have a clue, because he let the boy go, rather than keeping an asset player and promising him play time.
Whatever you choose to believe, Curtis has indeed admitted it was himself who advocated for the loan.
This in itself offers a further two revelations:
1: This is a smart lad who believed the best place to develop was not at Ibrox. But was instead at another club with a different kind of pressure. Killie were relegation candidates, and that loan seems to have been perfect for Curtis.
2: That Curtis believed he wouldn’t get the minutes at Ibrox, under that coach, and had to prove himself elsewhere. That still suggests Thelo Aasgaard was Rohl’s preference.
Specifically, Curtis said:
“I did push for a loan, I think it was the best thing for me. I think it is one of those ones where if you go and do really well, it will stand you in good stead.”
As we said before, Curtis’ head is clearly firmly attached to his shoulders. For a 19-year-old lad, he’s not naïve and he’s savvy.
He could just be the best signing Rangers make this summer.
